Lucien Adrion
1889 - 1953, French
See the art by this Artist »
Lucien Adrion was born in Strasbourg in 1889. A Post-Impressionist painter, engraver, and watercolorist, Adrion is renowned for his early twentieth-century depictions of Paris. He was a contemporary of Marquet, Lebasque and Camoin, and his style and the subjects of his paintings were obviously influenced by Camille Pissarro, particularly his series of views of the Tuileries Gardens.

Adrion studied as a draftsman in Strasbourg before departing for Paris in 1907 to work as a fashion sketcher. However, it was not long before he decided to become an artist instead. He traveled to Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin in 1909 before relocating in London in 1910, and again in Berlin in 1911. After serving in the German army during the First World War, Lucien studied copper engraving in Berlin under the supervision of Marc Chagall’s teacher, Professor Hermann Struck. He relocated to Paris in 1920, and held his first solo exhibition in 1921 at Galerie Cheron. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1926 as well as at an exhibition with Paul Signac in Berlin during the same year. He was shown at the Salon d’Automne in 1940 and several landscapes were hung at the Salon des Tuileries in 1941.

Lucien Adrion died in 1953, after which several memorial exhibitions were held, firstly in 1955 in Strasbourg, followed by shows at Galerie Marseille, Paris in 1958, and at Galerie Leo Spik & Erik Berger in Bad Kissingen, Germany in 1959. Additionally, Adrion’s works have featured in exhibitions at Galerie Abels, Cologne in 1973 and Galerie Henrich, Munich in 2003.
