Georges Terzian
b. 1939, Armenian

George Terzian was born in Marseille on March the 8th 1939. His Armenian parents originally lived in Russia but moved to France before he was born.

Terzian began to draw when he was very young. His parents inscribed him to the Beaux Arts School in Marseille but before finishing his studies, he quit to become boot maker. Whilst working Terzian continued to paint and to learn music in his workshop in Beaumont, Marseilles (the family home).

Working in oil and gouache, Georges Terzian initially experimented with post impressionist inspired painting. Similar to the post impressionist masters he admired, he painted the landscapes of Provence as his subject. Terzian was impressed greatly by the works of Cézanne and his taste and style began to evolve into Post Cubism. In this transition the artist moved the focus of his painting away from individual form, instead concentrating on the structural composition and the dynamism of his paintings.

Terzian travelled to Russia in 1959 and spent much of his time painting the Russian landscape. Returning to France in 1960 he developed an interest in the movement known as Abstraction-Creation. He began to view his subjects as a symphony of colours and shapes, and in doing so discovered that these colours and shapes became objects in their own right.

From 1960 Terzian’s painting focused almost entirely to still life scenes. Interested in the similarity between two perhaps outwardly unrelated objects he painted these objects together with a third unrelated object or abstract form. This became a recognisably regular theme in his work and is evident in a large part of the artist’s collection.

Georges Terzian’s works have been exhibited in a number of solo exhibitions in France, and have been acquired by many private collectors. Most recently a solo exhibition was held at Gallery Giovanni, in Paris in 2007. Since then, his paintings have drawn attention further afield and he has developed a presence on the secondary market in London, Paris and New York. Living in Paris today, Georges Terzian continues to paint.

The largest collection of his paintings to date will be exhibited at Alon Zakaim Fine Art, April 20 - May 21 2010.
