1854 - 1894, French
See the art by this Artist »
Norbert Goeneutte was born in Paris in 1854. His artistic career began at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he was a student of Isidore Pils. Upon Pils' death, Goeneutte left the studio when it was taken over by Henri Lehmann and moved to Montmartre to paint on his own. Goeneutte met Marcellin Desboutin, who encouraged his interest in etching, engraving, and drypoint. Goeneutte had his first exhibition at the Salon in 1876 and continued to exhibit each year from then on. Although he never chose to show with the Impressionists, he was greatly influenced by Manet, Renoir and Degas. Goeneutte traveled to London in 1880, Rotterdam in 1887 and Venice in 1890. His travels provided new subjects for his landscapes and town views. Goeneutte moved to Auvers-sur-Oise in 1891. An accomplished engraver, he illustrated many books, including “La Terre” by Emile Zola, which was published in 1899. He died in Auvers- sur-Oise in 1894.
