1848 - 1903, French See the art by this Artist » Born in Paris in 1848, the son of a Republican editor, Paul Gauguin had a colouful and varied life, taking time to commit to becoming an artist. In 1849 his family moved to Peru following Louis Napoleon's coming to power, but his father died on the trip. In 1855 they returned to France; Paul was later to become a merchant sailor, a member of the navy, and a broker's agent in Paris, which was to provide him with a comfortable income. However he became disillusioned with the bourgeouis life, and began to turn to painting. In 1874 he met Pissarro and several other Impressionists; two years later he would exhibit in the Salon. He began moving away from the Impressionists towards 'synthetic symbolism', which involved simplification of line, bright use of colour and flat planes. Gauguin left the stock exchange in 1883 to focus on painting; financial problems soon arose, and his health began to deteriorate. In 1888 he had his infamous meeting with Vincent van Gogh; three years later he moved to Tahiti, which was to prove extremely influential on his work, becoming brighter and bolder in colour and composition. Despite painting several masterpieces in his time here and in the Island of Dominique, where he moved in 1901, his health continued to worsen. Gauguin died in his home in Atuana on the 8th May, 1903.
