Jean-Léon Gérôme, born in Vesoul, 1824, was a French painter and sculptor, with a highly developed academic style. A student of Paul Delaroche, he subsequently attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, developing the style that was later to earn him several medals from the French Salon.
He became successful at a young age; after his Salon exhibition of The Cockfight (1846) he was to win critical acclaim; he won a further medal two years later, and in 1851 decorated a vase that was to be presented to Prince Albert. His tutor Delaroche encouraged him to submit work to the Magasin Pittoresque, for which he was accepted and continued to contribute regularly.
The year following his return to Paris for the third year of his studies proved to be highly influential. Following the death of his wife Delaroche closed his studio, suffering from depression; having decided to travel in Paris Gérôme chose to go with him, and spent his time studying the classical works which were to be so influential on his own work.
