Biography

Eugène Kissling was a French artist born in 1871. He worked during the turn of the 19th century and during the first few decades of the 20th century. He is particularly known for his depictions of rural France including views of the Marne river. His style, and especially his subject matter, can be regarded as being influenced by the Impressionist and Post Impressionist artists working a few years prior to him. Indeed, artists such as Pissarro and Cezanne both depicted views of the Marne river, and a focus on the day trippers travelling from Paris to enjoy the French countryside is synonymous with works by Monet, Caillebotte and later Seurat. Kissling chose to portray modern French life in a very overt way, depicting evidence of modernisation such as rail travel, and pleasureable pastimes such as rowing and cycling. His brushstrokes are dappled and energetic and his palette varied and vibrant.

Kissling died in 1944.
