Maurice Levis was born on 11 November 1860 in Paris, France. He studied at Academy under Harpignies, Jules Lefebvre and Billet. He made his debut at the 'Paris Salon' when he was 26 years old and joined the Artistes Francais in 1888.
By 1895 he was made a honourable member. In later years he won two important prizes; a third class medal in 1896 and a gold medal in 1927, which gained him fame and recognition amongst the French public. Maurice Levis is well recognised for his rural landscapes, often depicting rivers or wooded glades, which he painted with a charming lightness of touch. His paintings are full of movement and have a fleeting, ethereal quality.
