Paul Signac spent several significant periods in Bourg-Saint-Andéol, a charming town located in the Ardèche department of southeastern France. Signac was drawn to the region for its picturesque landscapes and tranquil atmosphere, which provided him with ample inspiration for his art.

Signac was interested in experimenting with watery landscapes, particularly exploring the shifting moods of the water, capturing the subtle changes that occurred with the slightest alteration in the direction of the wind or the tide. This was shaped by his own personal experiences as an avid yachtsman – a passion which had emerged during his youth after he purchased his first boat, marking the beginning of a life-long affair with the water that would see him own over thirty individual sailing crafts.

During his stays in Bourg-Saint-Andéol, Signac produced numerous paintings and sketches depicting the town's scenic beauty, as well as the surrounding countryside along the Rhône River. Paul Signac's time in Bourg-Saint-Andéol left an indelible mark on both his personal and artistic life. His paintings of the region stand as a testament to his love for the countryside and his ability to translate its beauty onto paper with remarkable skill and sensitivity.
